Valtiberina
The Valtiberina is the valley of the river Tiber that crosses it and determines its features. The landscape is extremely varied and is characterized by wide, rural, hilly and mountain areas. Among verdant woods, arise hamlets of unexpected elegance in which art and history meet nature, giving birth to a harmonious bond that the artistic skill of Piero della Francesca succeeded to immortalize. The land of Valtiberina, in fact, are named Lands of Piero, because the background of most of his paintings denotes his special relationship with this piece of Tuscany. His art, only recently reconsidered, is a worthy compendium of Geometry, competent use of light, rationality and abstraction; his style, apparently simple and essential, fans out to different explanations: philosophy, theology and modernity. The hometown of such a humanistic genius is Sansepolcro, and strolling among its streets means to get in contact with all the things that inspired Piero, and to breath the high level of prosperity reached by the city thanks to intense trading, religious and cultural relationships started at the beginning of the XV Century.
Anghiari, jewel of the valley and honored with the Orange Flag, preserves many treasures inside its walls. Its name recalls the Anghiari Battle, between Florence and Milan (1440), celebrated by Leonardo da Vinci in Palazzo della Signoria in Florence. For a full immersion in Valtiberina, you cannot miss a visit to Monterchi which hosts the very well-known Madonna del Parto, or to Caprese Michelangelo, which saw the birth of its namesake artist, or to Sestino with its Roman findings and green fields.
